Verizon will not honor grandfathered unlimited data if you upgrade this summer onward
May 16th
We knew this was coming. When and how, we weren’t sure, but we know it was coming. I’m referring to Verizon’s plan to get rid of unlimited data for those who are grandfathered in. When Verizon originally axed unlimited data they honored standard grandfathered clauses that allowed people to keep their unlimited data.
Even if you upgraded after that change you were able to keep your data. You can say goodbye to that soon. Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo announced in a conference call that users who wanted to upgrade their phone that’s on a grandfathered data plan from this summer onward would be forced to switch to the tiered and shared data plans that Verizon is looking to introduce.
We assume the policy will be enforced starting on the day those new plans start, but we don’t have a launch window outside of “summer” for those. For the time being you can upgrade and keep unlimited data, but you better act before it’s too late. It wasn’t clear whether or not this policy would apply to those who buy their phones off-contract either through Verizon, a retailer, or another source, but we’ll be trying to dig for confirmation.
I know many of you will be disappointed by Verizon’s decision, but I’m sure you’re no less surprised. Unlimited data is a dying breed and to expect Verizon to honor grandfathered contracts forever would be setting your hopes at an extremely high and unrealistic level. Sure, some less important perks may have lasted longer but Verizon’s bread and butter is data and they have to leverage that every way they can.
As a customer of Verizon, I’m going to do everything in my power to keep my unlimited data. If that means going without an upgrade, then so be it: my Galaxy Nexus should suffice for a fair amount of time beyond late 2013. And if people can last on the G1 this long (there are still some out there), then it should be no problem for me. Thoughts? [via The Verge]

We go hands on with Sega’s Sonic 4 Episode II THD, Now Available for Tegra 3 Devices [Video]
May 16th
Today, Sega released the Android version of Sonic 4 Episode II exclusively for Tegra 3 devices so I decided to get up early so I could get my Hedgehog on. After playing Episode 1 and totally getting hooked, I was stoked to see what the new THD episode had in store for Android gaming. As I expected, Sega hit this one out of the park. In combination with the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, Sonic 4 Episode II is a complete blast from the past and well worth the $6.99 it costs in the Google Play Store. It even rivals the original game as it was played on the Sega game console.
If you are anything like me, you played Sonic the Hedgehog in your parents basement for hours on end when you were little and you will take any excuse you can get to relive those days of pure, unadulterated enjoyment. To give you an idea of what you can expect from Sega’s newest Android release, I put together a little demo video of the game in action. Before you go running off to check out the video I also wanted to remind you about our series of NVIDIA contests we are holding. Insanely fast laser manages to catch electrons ionizing atoms
May 16th
Ionization is when an an atom loses or gains an electron. This happens to lots of atoms, but it happens so fast that nobody has ever caught ionization in the act. Now, scientists at the Vienna University of Technology have used an attosecond laser pulse to watch as a single electron packs its bags and takes off on its own.

China Mobile and Apple ‘Actively Talking’ About iPhone Cooperation
May 16th
China Mobile revealed on Wednesday that it is in negotiations with Apple to bring the iPhone to its network. Chairman Xi Guohua said during a shareholders meeting, I can’t give you too many details, but I’d like to repeat that both sides do hope to boost our cooperation.”
Xi was responding to questions about when the world’s largest carrier would begin offering the iPhone to its subscribers. As of earlier this year, China Mobile, which had 667 million subscribers as of March, is now the only carrier in China not selling Apple’s handset.
Having the iPhone on China Mobile is expected to be quite popular. Even though the company does not currently sell the device, the company has more than 15 million iPhone users on its network. It was projected earlier this year that China Unicom could sell 24 million iPhones in 2013.
China Unicom was Apple’s first carrier partner in the country. The wireless operator began selling the iPhone 3GS in 2009.
Even without China Mobile, Apple is seeing excellent growth in iPhone sales in Greater China. Sales of the device in the March 2012 quarter were five times those of the previous year.
One of the main obstacles in the way of a deal with China Mobile is that the carrier operates a home-grown 3G wireless network which would require a separate device.
There has been speculation that Apple would wait until its next-generation iPhone to sign with China Mobile. Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty believes Apple is likely to make use of a Qualcomm quad-mode baseband chip that could make the iPhone compatible with “all 3G and LTE network flavors.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II now available in the Google Play Store; comes infused with Tegra-optimized graphics
May 16th
Sega has officially announced the launch of the second episode of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for Android. It continues where episode one left off as you control Sonic and lead Tails on a fast-paced, ring-filled journey. The Tegra 3 version of this game will impress you with higher resolution textures, more on-screen objects, and better lighting.
Those improved graphics will really shine through on a tablet. Playing it on the Transformer Prime was a thrill and all of that screen real estate makes you appreciate the time and effort that went into optimizing the game to take advantage of the quad-core GeForce-equipped Tegra 3 processor.
Having played Episode one on my Xbox 360, I can say that these graphics are comparable, if not nearly identical. I almost feel like I shouldn’t even be purchasing the console version as I’d be able to take the Tegra 3 version on the go, and I could use my tablet as a console via HDMI and a wireless controller if need be.
Don’t have a Tegra 3 device? Well, you have a chance to win one thanks to NVIDIA’s Player’s Choice Awards voting sweepstakes. If you submit your votes for the best Tegra games in three different categories, you’ll be entered to win one of seven Transformer Prize Packs, including an ASUS Transformer Pad 300, a wireless game controller from Logitech, and a Jawbone JAMBOX Bluetooth boombox.
Get your votes in by clicking here or by snapping the QR code you see below. We’ll also be holding our second contest and announcing the winner of the first contest tomorrow so stay tuned for that! As for Sonic 4: Episode II, find that in TegraZone and in the Google Play Store.
