Aeris Rail+ – A Completely Customizable, Modular Case for iPhone 4/4S
May 16th

There are some pretty good tech-related Kickstarter projects around at the moment, and this is another great idea. The Aeris Rail+ is a bumper case you put on your iPhone, but it’s very different from others.
It has rails which allows you to slide on any Aeris accessory of your choice, which for now include such things as a kickstand and a handlebar attachment for your bike. Pretty cool, eh?
It’s another one of those ‘why didn’t I think of that products, and of course the expandability on this is pretty much infinite. Instead of buying one case that does one thing, it would be more practical to buy one case than can do many things, which is what Aeris are aiming for with this.
Kickstarter is a sure fire source for many great tech projects, so if you’re a geek with cash to burn, you might want to check it out if you haven’t already.

China Mobile and Apple ‘Actively Talking’ About iPhone Cooperation
May 16th
China Mobile revealed on Wednesday that it is in negotiations with Apple to bring the iPhone to its network. Chairman Xi Guohua said during a shareholders meeting, I can’t give you too many details, but I’d like to repeat that both sides do hope to boost our cooperation.”
Xi was responding to questions about when the world’s largest carrier would begin offering the iPhone to its subscribers. As of earlier this year, China Mobile, which had 667 million subscribers as of March, is now the only carrier in China not selling Apple’s handset.
Having the iPhone on China Mobile is expected to be quite popular. Even though the company does not currently sell the device, the company has more than 15 million iPhone users on its network. It was projected earlier this year that China Unicom could sell 24 million iPhones in 2013.
China Unicom was Apple’s first carrier partner in the country. The wireless operator began selling the iPhone 3GS in 2009.
Even without China Mobile, Apple is seeing excellent growth in iPhone sales in Greater China. Sales of the device in the March 2012 quarter were five times those of the previous year.
One of the main obstacles in the way of a deal with China Mobile is that the carrier operates a home-grown 3G wireless network which would require a separate device.
There has been speculation that Apple would wait until its next-generation iPhone to sign with China Mobile. Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty believes Apple is likely to make use of a Qualcomm quad-mode baseband chip that could make the iPhone compatible with “all 3G and LTE network flavors.”

WSJ: Next-Gen iPhone to Feature ‘At Least 4-Inch’ Screen, Production to Begin in June
May 16th
Apple has placed orders for at least 4 inch screens from its Asian suppliers for the next-gen iPhone, half an inch bigger than the current size, the Wall Street Journal reports. People familiar with the situation also revealed that production is set to begin next month, with Apple working with several display manufacturers including Sharp and LG.
Apple Inc., which is expected to launch its next-generation iPhone later this year, has ordered screens from its Asian suppliers that are bigger than the ones used in iPhones since they debuted in 2007, people familiar with the situation said.
Production is set to begin next month for the screens, which measure at least 4 inches diagonally compared with 3.5 inches on the iPhone 4S, the latest phone from Apple, the people said.
Interestingly, the report does not mention whether or not the aspect ratio of the screen will remain the same. Previous reports have suggested that Apple could include a larger display by increasing its height more than its width.
Apple has remained faithful to the original 3.5 inch screen size on the first iPhone way back in 2007, so it would be a considerable change should it take place (check out this concept) for an idea of what such a device might look like). However it is under increasing pressure to compete with the larger screens of the new Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Note, so it’s not completely unlikely that we would see such an increase in size.
It’s been previously reported by reliable sources that Apple’s next iPhone is expected to launch in October, and will include 4G LTE support. The device is also rumored to feature a smaller dock connector.
Update: Reuters has released a similar report confirming the details offered by WSJ, although Reuters claims the display will measure exactly 4 inches diagonally rather than “at least 4 inches,” as claimed by the Wall Street Journal.
The new iPhone screens will measure 4 inches from corner to corner, one source said. That would represent a roughly 30 percent increase in viewing area, assuming Apple kept other dimensions proportional. Apple has used a 3.5-inch screen since introducing the iPhone in 2007.

Apple’s Hollywood Dominance: Apple Products Featured In 40% Of Blockbusters
May 16th

Not only do Apple feature heavily in the technology industry, they are also heavily present in another completely different one: Hollywood, Business Insider reports. Apple devices appeared in 40% of all blockbusters last year alone. Many have also featured in older films (remember the PowerBook in Mission Impossible?).
More recently, there has been a Modern Family episode dedicated to buying Phil Dunphy an iPad and queuing outside the Apple Store as well as a Big Bang Theory episode revolving around Raj’s love for Siri.
Cinema and product placement in films can be a very lucrative form of advertising for both parties, however Apple’s presence is even more impressive as they haven’t had to pay a dime. Their products are included because the film makers want them, not because they have been paid.
Apple gadgets were discussed or shown 891 times in TV shows in 2011, another impressive stat when you think about it relative to how many blockbuster TV shows were made in the same period. Business Insider even adds that product placement and appearances in films and TV shows is becoming even more important than TV advertising due to the number of people who download or rent them off iTunes instead of watching them on TV
Could Hollywood be yet another industry Apple have indirectly played their part in? I think it’s fair to say they have.

Siri Recovers Her Witty Senses After Lumia 900 Blunder
May 16th
After the mishap which saw Siri recommend the Nokia Lumia 900 as the best smartphone ever, Apple has now fixed the issue, recovering Siri’s senses with a witty response, Apple Insider reports.
The problematic word was “ever”, as “What is the best smartphone?” returned responses like ‘The one you’re holding” without any issues. However with Apple’s fix everything is back to normal, with the possible response of ‘You’re kidding right?’ also added.
It’s also worth remembering that Siri is still a beta, so there will be mishaps like this that occur occasionally. It will probably take a while for Apple to eradicate all issues, but so far, they’ve done a pretty good job.
