Apple: Banning iPad Sales Would ‘Hurt China’s National Interest’
Feb 22nd
Apple once more squared off in court in Shanghai Wednesday with Proview, the company challenging the use of the “iPad” name. Apple argued that a ban on iPad sales would be negative for the nation of China.
Katie Marsal, reporting for AppleInsider:
“Proview has no product, no markets, no customers and no suppliers. It has nothing,” Hu Jinnan, a lawyer representing Apple, told the court, according to Reuters. “Apple has huge sales in China. Its fans line up to buy Apple products. The ban, if executed, would not only hurt Apple sales but it would also hurt China’s national interest.”
More than 100 reporters were present for the hearing. A ruling from the Shanghai Pudong New Area People’s Court is expected to be handed down soon.
Proview claims that it owns the right to the iPad name, and has asked the court to halt sales of the Apple tablet in China. The company has had some small success in having devices pulled from shelves in a handful of locations.
Proview said once more on Wednesday that they are open to an out of court settlement with Apple. Negotiations have not as yet begun.
Proview’s ownership of the iPad name originates with a product they released in 1999 with the same name. The product was a basic desktop computer.
Apple contends that Proview refuses to honor an existing agreement between the two companies, one that Proview contends was an unauthorized transaction with a Taiwanese affiliate.
Apple has threatened to sue the company for defamation, claiming that Proview has released false and misleading statements to the press.

Apple Extends Mac App Store Sandboxing Deadline to June 1st
Feb 22nd
Apple has released a notice to registered Mac developers informing them that the deadline to implement sandboxing in Mac App Store apps has been extended to June 1st. The deadline had initially been set for November, and was later postponed to March 1st.

We have extended the deadline for sandboxing your apps on the Mac App Store from March 1st to June 1st to provide you with enough time to take advantage of new sandboxing entitlements available in OS X 10.7.3 and new APIs in Xcode 4.3. Get more details about sandboxing your app and find answers to FAQs.
Sandboxing is a way to restrict an app’s access to only those system resources necessary for the app to function. This reduces the chance for any app to behave improperly and potentially compromise your system or the security of your data.
Starting June 1st, all new Mac App Store apps submitted to Apple must be sandboxed, and apps that already exist will not be able to submit additional updates for their apps until they implement Apple’s sandboxing.
While Sandboxing can be a very good thing for users, helping to keep their Macs stable and secure, apps that are deeply integrated into OS X, or that require access to certain system-level functions (like modifying the boot drive) may not be able to exist in the Mac App Store.

Apple TV Disappearing from Major Retailers, New Models Likely Coming Soon
Feb 22nd

The Apple TV set-top box has vanished or been listed as out of stock at a number of major retailers, including Amazon.com, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, and Buy.com (as reported by 9to5Mac), which strongly suggests that Apple is preparing to refresh the device in the coming weeks.

Apple’s popular set-top box currently only supports 720p output, but considering that the iPad 3 will likely feature a Retina display with greater than 1080p resolution, and that Apple is planning to bring AirPlay Mirroring for Macs in OS X Mountain Lion, an update to the Apple TV allowing 1080p content would seem to be a good move.
A ‘J33″ code name referring to a third-generation Apple TV was discovered in a developer beta of iOS 5.1, and further rumors have suggested that Apple may be preparing 1080p iTunes content to work with both the Apple TV and the forthcoming iPad 3.
The next-gen Apple TV is also rumored to possible feature Bluetooth 4.0 support, which would allow it to work with Bluetooth keyboards, and will likely run Apple’s next-gen A6 chip. The specific inclusion of AirPlay Mirroring support in Mountain Lion suggests that Apple still has plans for the Apple TV.
Combine all of the above factors with the fact that Tim Cook has stated on multiple occasions that the Apple TV is something he “can’t live without,” and the fact that so many retailers have run out of the devices at once (although they are still available from the online Apple Store), and it seems almost certain that new models are on the horizon.
Previous rumors have suggested that Apple may launch new models of the Apple TV alongside the iPad 3 on March 7th.

RUMOR: Apple to Launch iTunes Store, App Store Redesigns Later This Year
Feb 21st
In a move designed to keep Apple on top of the digital entertainment and software application businesses, they are preparing their first iTunes Store redesign in nearly three years.
Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac:
The redesign of the iTunes Store that runs on both the iTunes application for the Mac and the PC is a top priority for Apple. The work on the redesign comes soon after the launch of new services in the United States such as the Spotify music streaming service and the growing popularity of Amazon’s online music store. Apple dominates the majority of the digital music market, and it will continue to bet on an in-application download store and not an online store found only in a web browser.
The new design is said to be even simpler and more user-friendly than the current design. Apple is working on ways to enhance the speed and efficiency of finding new content, such as songs, videos, and applications. The cornerstone element of Apple’s new iTunes Store is interactivity. As Apple vaguely explained to a number of music labels and entertainment partners, Apple is looking to make the iTunes Store a much more engaging experience.
Even though the iTunes App Store is a popular service, users have complained about how difficult it is to find new and exciting software for their devices. Apple is likely working on a more interactive way to locate iOS software in the store.
It is not known if the new iTunes Store will launch alongside an entirely new version of the iTunes application. The new iTunes Store interactivity features are said to be for the iTunes Music, Movies, TV Show, and App Store sections, but may very well spread to the iBookstore.
