Apple Extends Free 20GB iCloud Storage Offer for MobileMe Users to September 30th
May 9th

There can be no doubt that Apple is actively trying to push their customers towards iCloud, and are throwing as many bones as possible to MobileMe users to help them make the transition. In their latest move, Apple has now increased the deadline for MobileMe users to claim 20GB of free iCloud storage to September 30th.

From Apple’s MobileMe transition FAQ page (via The Verge):
MobileMe members with 20GB of purchased storage receive a complimentary iCloud storage upgrade of 20GB, and accounts with additional purchased storage (40GB to 60GB) receive a complimentary upgrade of 50GB after moving to iCloud. These free upgrades are good through September 30th, 2012. After that date, you can continue the upgrade at the regular price or let it expire and use the free 5GB plan.
Apple initially offered to give 20Gb of free iCloud storage to MobileMe customers who migrated before June 30th, essentially giving users an extra 3 months to claim their free iCloud storage. This follows Apple’s previous offer to send a free copy of Snow Leopard to MobileMe users to encourage them to upgrade from Leopard to OS X Lion.
Even though Apple’s attempting to make the switch to iCloud as appealing as possible (and even though MobileMe will be discontinued on June 30th), many still hesitate to migrate. What about you? Have you made the switch to iCloud?

RIM Targets Apple With New ‘Wake Up’ Ad Campaign
May 8th

Following the staging of a mock protest at an Australia Apple Store, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has unleashed a new ‘Wake Up” attack ad campaign against Apple. They’ve also launched a new website for their campaign, which features an audio clip explaining why they think you should switch to the BlackBerry.

BGR reports:
The wake up, be bold site states that BlackBerry owners are the type of people who “take action and make things happen.” Taking a shot at Apple’s well-known slogan, RIM goes on to note that BlackBerry users don’t just “think different,” they “do different.”
“It’s a simple choice,” the website continues. “You’re either here to leave your mark and eat opportunity for breakfast or you’re satisfied to just float through life like a cork in the stream.”
Unfortunately, RIM has been floating like a cork for some while now as their marketshare continues to decline, and as business continue to move over to Apple’s iOS platform or Android. Hopefully the new BlackBerry 10 platform will help change that.
At the moment, however, until BlackBerry proves that they still have something serious to offer to users, marketing ploys like this only make them seem desperate. As the campaign itself states, “You’re either in business, or you’re not”. And right now, RIM is not.

Samsung and Apple Drop Nearly Half of Patent Claims To Keep July 30th Trial Date
May 8th

It was only last week that Judge Lucy Koh told Apple and Samsung they both had to reduce the number of patent claims if they hoped to keep the proposed July 30th date for the start of their first US trial. Now, both Apple and Samsung have appeared to budge, filing motions that cut the number of claims nearly in half, with Apple dropping all of their asserted trademark claims. Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean the companies can’t reassert the dismissed claims at a later trial.
It was originally thought Apple would be in it for the long haul, but with Sammy’s devices continuing to gain market share — and not looking to stop anytime soon with the Samsung Galaxy S3 — Apple could be trying to speed things up with a quick resolution of the case. There is still a court recommended mediation scheduled for this month.
Apple still maintains that Samsung is nothing more than a “copycat,” using Apple as the “developer of the world” to come up with new ideas. Apple’s Tim Cook says, “we just want people to invent their own stuff.” Samsung maintains that Apple is simply trying to “compete through litigation.” July 30th is the day that things get real interesting. <popcorn.gif>
