Apple Scaling Back iPhone Production Ahead of New Models This Fall
May 16th
With Apple’s next iPhone likely to launch this fall, it’s hardly surprising to hear that Apple is starting to scale back orders of existing iPhones. In fact, according to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu (via CNET), Apple appears to be scaling iPhone productiion back as much as 25% – a significant sign that new iPhone hardware is indeed planned to launch within the coming months.

Production changes among Apple’s manufacturing partners are typically very good signs of what’s coming from the company – and it makes sense for Apple to begin decreasing production of current iPhone models now so they have less inventory to deal with when the next-gen iPhone launches this fall.
Wu’s claims seem very believable, especially when placed in a historical perspective. Apple launched the iPhone 4S in October of last year, and reportedly began scaling back production of the iPhone 4 in late June.
Considering that the next-gen iPhone will likely be in even higher demand than the iPhone 4S, it makes sense for Apple and their suppliers to begin preparing somewhat earlier than last year.

China Mobile and Apple ‘Actively Talking’ About iPhone Cooperation
May 16th
China Mobile revealed on Wednesday that it is in negotiations with Apple to bring the iPhone to its network. Chairman Xi Guohua said during a shareholders meeting, I can’t give you too many details, but I’d like to repeat that both sides do hope to boost our cooperation.”
Xi was responding to questions about when the world’s largest carrier would begin offering the iPhone to its subscribers. As of earlier this year, China Mobile, which had 667 million subscribers as of March, is now the only carrier in China not selling Apple’s handset.
Having the iPhone on China Mobile is expected to be quite popular. Even though the company does not currently sell the device, the company has more than 15 million iPhone users on its network. It was projected earlier this year that China Unicom could sell 24 million iPhones in 2013.
China Unicom was Apple’s first carrier partner in the country. The wireless operator began selling the iPhone 3GS in 2009.
Even without China Mobile, Apple is seeing excellent growth in iPhone sales in Greater China. Sales of the device in the March 2012 quarter were five times those of the previous year.
One of the main obstacles in the way of a deal with China Mobile is that the carrier operates a home-grown 3G wireless network which would require a separate device.
There has been speculation that Apple would wait until its next-generation iPhone to sign with China Mobile. Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty believes Apple is likely to make use of a Qualcomm quad-mode baseband chip that could make the iPhone compatible with “all 3G and LTE network flavors.”

Apple’s Hollywood Dominance: Apple Products Featured In 40% Of Blockbusters
May 16th

Not only do Apple feature heavily in the technology industry, they are also heavily present in another completely different one: Hollywood, Business Insider reports. Apple devices appeared in 40% of all blockbusters last year alone. Many have also featured in older films (remember the PowerBook in Mission Impossible?).
More recently, there has been a Modern Family episode dedicated to buying Phil Dunphy an iPad and queuing outside the Apple Store as well as a Big Bang Theory episode revolving around Raj’s love for Siri.
Cinema and product placement in films can be a very lucrative form of advertising for both parties, however Apple’s presence is even more impressive as they haven’t had to pay a dime. Their products are included because the film makers want them, not because they have been paid.
Apple gadgets were discussed or shown 891 times in TV shows in 2011, another impressive stat when you think about it relative to how many blockbuster TV shows were made in the same period. Business Insider even adds that product placement and appearances in films and TV shows is becoming even more important than TV advertising due to the number of people who download or rent them off iTunes instead of watching them on TV
Could Hollywood be yet another industry Apple have indirectly played their part in? I think it’s fair to say they have.

Apple Ordering 4 Inch Screens For Next Gen iPhone?
May 16th
Apple has placed orders for at least 4 inch screens from its Asian suppliers for the next-gen iPhone, half an inch bigger than the current size, the Wall Street Journal reports. People familiar with the situation also revealed that production is set to begin next month for screens, with Apple working with several manufacturers including Sharp and LG.
If the bigger screen size is confirmed, the new iPhone might look something similar to the mockup above (on the left), or it might not if we see a radical new design.
Apple has remained faithful to the original 3.5 inch screen size on the first iPhone way back in 2007, so it would be a considerable change should it take place. However it is under increasing pressure to compete with the larger screens of the new Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Note, so it’s not completely unlikely that we see such an increase in size.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE and AT&T HTC One X Delayed – Apple To Blame
May 16th

Two of HTC’s heavy hitters — the HTC EVO 4G LTE and HTC One X — are facing shipping delays here in the states due to a U.S. Customs investigation. Apparently, both devices are being examined to ensure they aren’t in violation of an International Trade Commission exclusion order over Apple patent #5,946,647 (having to do with clickable links inside messaging and browser apps). HTC was supposed to have taken care of the issue but in a statement today, HTC announced:
“The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order. We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.”

Take a quick jump onto AT&T’s website, and you’ll notice both grey and white version of the One X are currently “out of stock,” and now it seems the EVO 4G LTE wont make its intended May 18th debut on Sprint.
HTC has been faced with ongoing legal troubles from Apple over patents on a few specific HTC devices and although it’s unclear why only these 2 HTC devices were targeted, we can only imagine Apple had something to do with this. The end of 2011 wasn’t the best year for the Taiwanese manufacturer and HTC was hoping hoping to get a good start on 2012 by beating the Samsung Galaxy S3 out of the gate. This would help them gain some of that valuable market share they’ve been losing to the GS2.
Let’s hope we wont have to wait too long before we can one again get our hands on arguably, the finest devices Android has to offer. Will this delay affect anyone’s decision to get their hands on the EVO LTE before the Galaxy S3 arrived? Let’s pretend for a second that this delay pushes the EVO LTE to launch right around the same time as the S3. Which would you choose?
