Apple and Disney Discuss Bringing WatchESPN App To Apple TV
May 15th

Disney is reportedly willing to consider a deal which would see the WatchESPN app be transitioned from iOS to the Apple TV platform, potentially allowing ESPN subscribers to watch the internet service right from their TV.

Bloomberg reports:
“We’re a platform-agnostic content company,” Sean Bratches, the network’s executive vice president of affiliate and advertising sales, said today in an interview. “To the extent that in the future there’s an opportunity with Apple to authenticate through the pay-TV food chain as we’re doing with Microsoft, that’s something that we will participate in.”
ESPN in the most watched sports network in the US, and the ability to get it on your Apple TV would be yet another selling point for the device, so hopefully Apple will give it further consideration to please all the sports fans.

Greenpeace Projects Images Onto Apple Headquarters, Protests for a Cleaner iCloud
May 15th

Taking its push for a “clean” iCloud to Apple’s Cupertino campus this week, Greenpeace projected images onto the main building of Apple’s corporate headquarters.
In addition to projecting messages of support from Twitter and Facebook users onto the side of the building, Greenpeace activists also barricaded themselves inside an eight-foot-tall, ten-foot-wide “survival device” that has previously been used to prevent Arctic drilling.
Also featured during the demonstration were four Greenpeace members dressed as iPhones, with fully functional screens across their torsos. The screens displayed messages from supporters via Facebook and Twitter.
“Apple’s executives have thus far ignored the hundreds of thousands of people asking them to use their influence for good by building a cloud powered by renewable energy,” Greenpeace USA Executive Director Phil Radford said. “As Apple’s customers, we love our iPhones and iPads, but we don’t want to use an iCloud fueled by the smog of dirty coal pollution.”
The organization claims more than 215,000 people have signed its “Clean our Cloud” petition, which asks Apple to power the iCloud service with clean, renewable energy. Greenpeace takes issue with Apple using some coal fired energy for its North Carolina facility.
The demonstration Tuesday was part of a continuing effort by Greenpeace to promote its “How Clean is Your Cloud” report, issued in April. The report accuses Apple of falling behind other tech companies in using environmentally friendly power sources for its cloud-based services.
Apple has countered the report with its own figures that show that renewable energy will provide more than 50 percent of the center’s power needs than Greenpeace has projected.
Greenpeace staged a protest last month on the roof of Apple’s European headquarters in Cork, Ireland, placing signs on the building’s windows to spell out the words “clean our cloud”.

The Big Business of Apple (Infographic)
May 15th
It’s no surprise Apple has mountains of cash in their vaults. Just sitting there, nobody dives in occasionally to take a cash swim, and sadly, no one riffles through the bills and winks at the presidents. A waste, really.
How does Apple keep this incredible cash flow pouring in? Is it all just iPhone and iPad sales? Our friends at Businessdegree.net have put together a great little infographic about “The Big Business of Apple”. There is some great information here. Enjoy.

Apple Wins Appeal, Pursues Preliminary Injunction Against Samsung
May 15th

Remember how Apple tried to obtain a preliminary injunction against Samsung to stop them from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (and some phones) from being sold in the U.S.? If you’ll recall, Samsung won that battle as the district court denied Apple’s request, questioning the validity of a couple of Apple’s patents. The court couldn’t see how Apple would be “irreparably harmed” if Samsung were to continue selling its products.
Apple, of course, appealed that decision. And it looks like the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) has granted Apple another chance at getting that injunction. Three of the four patents in dispute were upheld by the CAFC, but they found fault with the lower court’s ruling that Apple’s tablet design patent was potentially invalid.
Basically, the lower court said that Apple’s tablet design patent was probably invalid due to the fact that there were two other tablet designs created long before Apple patented the iPad’s design, making the iPad’s design “obvious”. The CAFC, however, found that one of those old designs had significant differences, which was enough to render Apple’s patent “non-obvious” in the higher court’s opinion.
So the higher court found that the lower court “construed the claimed design too broadly” and remanded the case so that the lower court could reconsider its decision. In other words, they were forced into a “do over”. This helps Apple, but they still have to persuade the judge that they will be irreparably harmed if Samsung continues to sell its products… something that might be hard to prove considering how successful the iPad is.

WSJ: Apple to Unveil Instagram-Like Photo Sharing, Significant iCloud Updates at WWDC
May 15th

Following earlier reports that iOS 6 will feature a new 3D mapping platform, as well as possible Siri support for iPad and 3rd-party Siri APIs, The Wall Street Journal reports (via 9to5Mac) that Apple is also planning significant upgrades and improvements to iCloud.

According to the report, Apple is planning new photo and video sharing features for iCloud that will function like a social network, allowing users to post pictures, as well as comment on pictures that others have uploaded – this may be why Phil Schiller recently “quit” Instagram.
In addition to the new social photo sharing, Apple will also reportedly unveil the ability to wirelessly sync videos across iOS devices (likely an extension of their current Photo Stream service that also supports recorded video).
The report also claims that Apple will add new Notes and Reminders web apps to iCloud.com – features that have already been inadvertently leaked on iCloud’s beta site.
This is just the latest of many rumors regarding what Apple will unveil at WWDC. It’s looking like June may be an incredible month for Apple fans, and this years WWDC keynote may be the most exciting one to date!
