Foxconn Employees Arrested For iPad 2 Design Leak
Apr 28th
Prior to the iPad 2 announcement, a number of “leaked” case designs surfaced, providing a good idea of what the iPad 2 would look like. This morning, Digitimes reported that three Foxconn employees were arrested for leaking the information.

These cases all showcased the same elements – tapered edges, thinner body, and flat back, which suggested that manufacturers seemed to have access to design documents. The three Foxconn employees were all charged with violating trade secrets.
From Digitimes:
Several online shopping retailers in China were able to sell iPad 2′s protective case products before the iPad 2 was even launched, leading Foxconn to suspect that there might have been some employees leaking the design of iPad 2 which it reported to the local police.
The local police on December 26, 2010, arrested three employees that were suspected of leaking the design, and officially charged the three employees for violating the company’s trade secrets on March 23, 2011, the reported added.
For those that don’t know, Foxconn is one of Apple’s main manufacturing companies, assembling products such as iPhones, iPods, and iPads. It’s not the first time we’ve seen leaks like this from China… but the widespread nature of the leaks did post some significant threat for Apple last year, at least from a design perspective.

Apple Retail Employees Blocked From May Vacations
Apr 20th
Something is stirring at Apple this may – retail employees have apparently been told that they may NOT request any vacation days in late May, which could indicate that Apple is planning something for their 10th retail anniversary.
According to AppleInsider, the information came to employees via an email – no days off between May 20 and 22. Store managers are said to be very excited regarding those dates, but details are extremely sparse.
Gary Allen of ifoAppleStore.com said the most likely use for those days is a 10th anniversary event commemorating a decade of Apple’s brick-and-mortar retail stores. He said it’s likely that the company may do something anniversary-related to “attract a crowd” for a few days, but he hasn’t heard any specifics.
There are a number of possible new product launches expected in the coming weeks and months – possible MobileMe and iWork refreshes, new iMacs with Thunderbolt I/O support and Sandy Bridge processors, a possible new Apple TV, and so forth.
It’s possible that Apple may culminate several of these refreshed/releases around that anniversary dates, and there is some chance that that date could bring additional news regarding OS X Lion or iOS 5.
From AppleInsider
Apple had employee blackout dates earlier this year as it prepared for two major product launches at the start of 2011: the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPad 2.
The first two Apple stores opened May 19, 2001 in McLean, Virginia, at the Tyson’s Corner Mall, and at the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, Calif. The retail side of Apple’s business has become an important part of the growth of the Mac, as the company reports every quarter that about half of all Macs sold in retail stores are to customers who never owned a Mac before.
Whatever is happening, it certainly seems as if its expected to be a big freaking deal – so be prepared for a doozy! As always, we’ll keep a watchful eye.

(UPDATE) YouTube pulled video – It Gets Better: Apple Employees
Apr 16th

UPDATE
YouTube has pulled the video for violation of their “policy on depiction of harmful activities.” YouTube has crossed the line on censorship. How does talking about preventing suicide depict harmful activities?
Someone has mirrored the original video, watch it before YouTube pulls this one as well.

This is an inspiring video created by brave Apple employees as a contribution to the It Gets Better Project. It’s a program for “LGBT youth [who] can’t picture what their lives might be like as openly gay adults” and for the prevention of suicide.

AT&T Expects to Let Go of Some Markets, Employees in Merger
Mar 31st

Some bad news has come out of AT&T’s Randall Stephenson. He shed some light on negative effects of the merger – something I bet they haven’t been trying to talk about – and admits that AT&T will have to drop a few pounds in the process should the FCC grant them T-Mobile’s hand in this very unorthodox marriage. (Yes, I know that joke. No, I won’t tell it… at least not here.)
He told the Wall Street Journal that AT&T would have to divest some markets in order to bring all of those T-Mobile customers over meaning a few of you might have to join up with Verizon or Sprint once it’s all said and done. Randall couldn’t state which markets would be affected which is understandable as the deal hasn’t even been approved yet.
They also regret to inform everyone that some employees will have to be let go as the two entities merge. It’s a common nasty side-effect of mergers in any industry but it never does sit right with us whenever we hear some folks will be out of a job in this troubled economy.
Stephenson did attempt to make this episode more cheery, though, as he states that the merger would make AT&T’s network more reliable and customers may even experience price drops on voice and data plans because of it. We’ll hold our breath on that claim until AT&T actually goes to integrate all of those new customers and contracts, though.
