Motorola Cliq 2 getting Gingerbread 1.5 years late and not OTA
May 5th

While it is true that it is better late than never, Motorola/T-Mobile has crossed the line with this one. It has been about a year and a half since the Motorola CLIQ 2 was announced, and it is now getting its Android 2.3 update. And to make matters even more inconvenient, the update will not be pushed over the air.
The update is said to come with Gingerbread and includes improved cursor controls, as well as better battery performance and a good list of other fixes. So if you are still holing on to your Cliq 2, you will be very glad to know that the waiting has paid off.
As mentioned above, though, the update process won’t be as intuitive and has to be done manually. Users can head to Motorola’s site for instructions and downloads. So if you want some Gingerbread goodness (now that ICS is the big boy), go right ahead and update your device.

Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread Show Gains in Latest Android Version Numbers
May 2nd
Google released the latest Android version numbers showing the distribution of all Android versions, collected from all the devices that access the Google Play Store during the last two weeks of the month. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich saw steady gains, as did Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
- Sales of new devices with Android 4.0 contributed to a 2% increase for ICS to a total of 4.9% as compared to last month. Updates to existing phones and tablets running Gingerbread and Honeycomb have also helped keep the rise of ICS steady.
- Speaking of Honeycomb, its numbers remained flat at 3.3%, which is no surprise since Honeycomb tablet sales have been fairly slow, as have the rollouts of updates to existing Honeycomb tablets to Ice Cream Sandwich.
- The largest piece of the pie got a tad larger with Gingerbread devices rising 0.7% to 64.4%. Yep, most phones out there are still being sold with Android 2.3 on them, though that will slowly change as newer ICS-based devices begin to hit the market.
- Froyo and Eclair predictably continue their decline to 20.9% and 5.5% respectively.
Expect these trends to continue as new devices are released and older ones get updates. Now just when will Jellybean start showing up?

Meet Aisha. Micromax’s Siri for the Gingerbread powered A50 Ninja
Apr 29th
Ever since the Siri announcement during the unveiling of the iPhone 4S last year, there have been a slew of voice-based assistant apps for Android. And though I am yet to find one that performs as well as it claims to, there’s no denying the marketing potential of them.
This makes the focus on Aisha in the publicity material for Micromax’s latest device for the Indian market, the Superfone A50 Ninja, understandable. First things first, the phone aims at the extreme low end, costing only Rs 4999 (USD 95). It runs Gingerbread on an undisclosed 650 MHz processor, packs a 3.1 inch screen and a 2-megapixel camera.
Considering the price, it’s pretty impressive that Micromax has chosen to offer such a pre-loaded app. AISHA, which stands for Artificial Intelligence Speech Handset Assistant, was developed by Dexetra, the developer behind another voice-assistant, IRIS.
I personally expect the phone to do well. It’s already the cheapest Android smartphone that I’ve heard of in the Indian market (I might be wrong about this since there are so many lower-end devices over here that it’s tough to keep track of). The presence of AISHA will undoubtedly make the A50 Ninja stand out.
