The HTC One V lives! Hands-on part two from CTIA 2012 [video]
May 8th
If you remember back at Mobile World Congress, HTC had the One V out for all to see… except it was just a prototype. We were allowed to play with the device but there wasn’t much to do but look. We decided to see if the device made any progress, and lo and behold: the video you see above proves that it has a heart.
Despite being a One phone, the One V doesn’t house an S4 processor. It instead houses Qualcomm’s S3 processor, a dual-core offering that is still enough to run Sense 4.0 and Android 4.0 without too much of an issue. At the time of this writing, the device’s software either wasn’t near completion or HTC had to gimp the device to make work smoothly.
Namely, their 3D recent apps feature seen on the One S, One X, EVO 4G LTE, and DROID Incredible 4G is not present here: you get the stock Android 4.0 look and feel for that. Another feature that is gone is contuinous shooting, and it won’t be coming back. ‘
Since the phone doesn’t have the ImageSense chip inside it can’t shoot up to 20 simultaneous photos. You can still hold the camera button down and take a series of photos, but it won’t be nearly as fast as on the aforementioned devices. You can also still take a photo while video is being recorded.
A few other subtle changes were made to the eye-candy to make it easier on the S3 processor. It makes us wonder why newer offerings such as the Rezound won’t get Sense 4.0. It was first blamed on the processor, then HTC quickly transitioned into saying it was because it was a one phone.
But the Rezound is as powerful, if not more, than the One V. Ultimately it just seems like a business move to get people to upgrade, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It works for Apple and they get no backlash so why not? I digress, though. Check out the quick retake above.

Apple Wooing EPIX to be a Part of Their Upcoming TV
Apr 30th
Reuters reports that Apple began talks earlier this year to stream films owned by EPIX, a cable premium television and internet streaming service backed by three major studios. Apple wants to stream the content on multiple devices, including a television, according to sources.
Reuters:
Apple, which now sells a $99 set-top box that hooks up to a television set and lets users stream online content from Netflix and the MLB channel, opened discussions with three-year-old EPIX, created by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, MGM and Viacom’s Paramount Pictures.
Sources told Reuters that any agreements would apply to Apple’s set top box, and also to any upcoming devices that would stream content. Apple is expected to unveil a television product later this year, or early next year.
Apple has been stymied for much of the past year in securing marquee Hollywood content. Talks with EPIX are in the preliminary stages and no agreement is considered near, the source said.
The talks could run into complications. EPIX has a 2010 agreement with Netflix, which pays $200 million a year for the rights to stream movies to it 23.4 million users. The deal gives Netflix exclusive streaming rights through September.
Apple has declined to comment on what it termed “speculation”. Netflix and EPIX spokesmen also had no comment.

Review: WIMM One Smart Watch – Part 1 – Initial setup and functionality [Hands on Video]
Mar 5th
I recently had a chance to get my hands on the new WIMM One from WIMM Labs, which is an Android-powered module that becomes a smart watch when it’s inserted into the accompanied watchstrap. Over the last year, there has been several Android watches released, but the WIMM One just might be the cream of the crop. The WIMM One can work as an extension of your phone, but it’s powerful enough to also run apps. The WIMM Labs Micro App Store Beta opened only about a week ago, but you will already find 30 or so apps ranging from games, lifestyle, and productivity. I expect it to continue to grow exponentially.
The WIMM One measures 1.26 inches by 1.42 inches and is 0.49 inches thick (about 12.5mm). It has a 1.41-inch (160 x 160) TFT capacitive touchscreen display, a Samsung ARM11 processor running at 667 MHz, 256MB of RAM, 2GB of internal storage, WiFI, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, a magnetometer, a GPS, and is splash resistant. It’s priced at $199, which includes the WIMM One 330 Module, USB charging kit, and a black watchstrap.
It’s running on Android 2.1, which at first was a turnoff for me, but after using the WIMM One for a short time I realized it really doesn’t matter what version of Android it is. It’s a completely forked version and is not meant to have all the capabilities of a phone or a tablet. Nonetheless, the WIMM One has a lot of capabilities which I plan on showing you in a series of videos.
Starting today with part 1, I will show you the initial setup, the core functionality, watchfaces, and the pre-installed apps.
Click here to view the embedded video.
Look for Part 2 soon, which will show you the capabilities of the Companion app, which links your WIMM One to your phone via Bluetooth.

Apple Extend ‘Matching Gift’ Program to Part Time Employees
Jan 27th

Apple’s ‘Matching Gift’ program, where Apple match any donation by an employee to charity, has now been expanded to include part time employees as well, MacGeneration reports.
Microsoft operate a similar scheme, but instead of the donation limit being $10,000, as it is with Apple, Microsoft have a $12,000 ceiling. Tim Cook has also promised that Apple employees abroad will be the next to join the scheme.
As of the 11th of November 2011, Apple reported having received $1.3 million in donations, therefore making a donation total of $2.6 million.
