Google Possibly Entering Tablet Domain With Branded Device
Feb 25th

With branded handsets under the Nexus moniker, it’s really only a matter of time before Google considers beginning to dive into the domain of tablets. Its Android operating system runs on tablets fit for contention with Apple’s iPad, so it would be a no brainer for the tech giant to launch a branded tablet. Richard Shim, an analyst with DisplaySearch, seems to think this could happen as early as this year.
According to Shim, the tablet will provide a 7-inch interface, running at 1280×800. For some perspective, the Kindle Fire‘s resolution is only 1024×600. Production is reported to begin in April, with an initial production run of between 1.5 and 2 million units. It isn’t clear on whether Google will market the device as a premium device, or something more along the lines of a competitor for tablets like the Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook series. I’m inclined to believe simply on precedent that Google would prefer to provide a premium device as their branded flagship, but the alleged specifications might suggest that Google is planning on overtaking the mid-range tablet class. Only time will tell, before we possibly see a Nexus Tab released into the wild.

Toshiba Thrive owners have been wondering what Toshiba’s plans for bringing the Android 4.0 update to the tablet were, and one lucky soul finally cracked an answer out of them. They mentioned on Twitter that they would look to bring Ice Cream Sandwich to the 10 inch version of the device by the end of Spring. They only said that they are “targeting” end of Spring, though, so if that comes and goes don’t get too mad at Toshiba.
